My piece Winter Storm is a Canadian acrylic snowy landscape of the viewer looking down a mountain into a snowy storm. The color pallet was chosen and mixed to incorporate both warm and cool colors. Firstly I traditionally hand painted the gradient in the sky from a warm red purple to a cool light blue. I used a paint pouring fluid method of painting next to create the dark purple, blue and light soft ink clouds. I them made a base layer of dark and light blues as the undertone in the snowy foreground and used acrylic pouring mixed with silicon oils to add a viscous layer of bright white. The pouring method is used to achieve really amazing abstract patterns, swirls and bubbles in the snow. I poured the dark pine trees and added whites and lighter greens until the foreground was complete. The pine trees composition is taller on the sides to suggest the trees are growing smaller with distant perspective.
I handmade this frame with a .75 inch spacing and stained my hand constructed floating frame a dark provincial brown to create a dark contrast to the snow.
Winter Storm is full of mood and with fill a space with life and the fluid motion of the clouds and snow sky are ever-changing. The poured sky's detail looks incredible close up and the dark green of the pine tree will thrive beside any house potted plants or trees.
